A New Year, A New Site

John Vaillant and Bob Hansen talk big predators on Meares Island.
I've been wanting to re-vamp my website for quite a while now, so it seemed like a good way to start a new year. 2010 was a great year for us; we are so privileged to live where we do, doing work we love. We had many great family times, but we were also honoured to be asked to accompany some visiting authors on trips into Clayoquot Sound. In the spring, we went birding with Margaret Atwood and Graeme Gibson, which was a fabulous few hours. More on that another time. For now, here is a photo from this fall, when we went with John Vaillant and his family to Meares Island. It had been awhile since my own children had been to the island, so this was a great opportunity for us all. John and my husband, Bob, had a lot to talk about - mainly the role of large predators on the landscape. Bob has been working on a multi-year predator project on the coast, primarily focussing on wolves and cougars, and John was on tour with The Tiger, which is a fabulous story that delves into so much — the Amur tiger and its habitat, the history of the people in the far east of Russia, life after perestroika and so much more. I encourage you to look for it, for John's other book. The Golden Spruce, and anything else you ever see him write!
